A patient wearing Varilux® Comfort® is able to cover a much wider field without head movements. This improvement has been achieved by the development of a smoother lens surface. The rate at which the optical characteristics (including lens power, prismatic effect and surface astigmatism) vary over the surface of the lens is much slower.This results in a significant reduction in the swaying or ‘swimming’ effect).

There are two main reasons for wearing Varilux lenses rather than single vision lenses or bifocals:

The prescription in a Varilux lens changes gradually. From distance vision at the top of the lens, through intermediate vision for closer objects to near vision at the bottom of the lens. As there is no middle distance 'gap' and no irritating, ageing line across the lens, Varilux lenses are more efficient and attractive than bifocals. They can replace several pairs of spectacles i.e. distance, reading, or even mid-distance, without having to switch, all in a single pair of spectacles.

With single vision lenses, you have to peer over your reading spectacles to see in the distance or switch to your distance glasses. With bifocals, there's an unflattering line. With Varilux, one lens gives you all distances, with no bifocal line.
